The appointment

What happens during your polygraph examination

Most people have never taken a polygraph, and the uncertainty is the hardest part of the day. Here is the whole appointment, start to finish. Plan on two to three hours.

01 · Pre-test

The interview

The examiner reviews the issue with you, explains the instrument, and writes the questions together with you. Nothing on the test will be a surprise. You see every question before any data is recorded.

02 · Collection

The charts

Pneumo · Cardio · EDA

Sensors record respiration, cardiovascular activity, and electrodermal response while the agreed questions are asked in sequence. The instrument measures physiology only. Unlike voice stress analyzers, a polygraph does not assess the voice.

03 · Analysis

The opinion

Your examiner scores the charts numerically and issues a written opinion, usually the same day. Read about accuracy and error rates.

Michael was very friendly, respectful and straightforward. The process was very well done from check-in to the testing. You could tell he was a well seasoned pro. For my first time having a polygraph done he made me feel as much at ease as possible and was very transparent about the process.

Clients

The people who depend on us

Law enforcement agencies

Federal, state, and local agencies use polygraph examinations to corroborate statements, focus investigations, and screen applicants. We build around your existing procedures rather than forcing you into ours.

The legal community

Defense attorneys, U.S. Attorney offices, and district attorney offices test accounts early, while the information can still change the outcome. We are used to working under privilege and to deadline.

Employers and private clients

Businesses operating under an EPPA exemption, and individuals with a personal matter to resolve, get the same standard of care as our agency clients. Scheduling is flexible and everything stays confidential.

Behavioral Measures & Forensic Services is a polygraph and forensic psychophysiology practice. We do not provide forensic engineering, construction schedule analysis, digital or video forensics, or security and vulnerability assessments.

Before you book

Questions we hear before every lie detector test

How much does a lie detector test cost in Dallas?

Pricing depends on the examination type and how many issues need covering. A single-issue exam is quoted as one flat fee covering the pre-test interview, chart collection, scoring, and a written report. Call (972) 437-4597 for a firm quote before you book. There is no charge for the initial conversation.

How accurate is a polygraph examination?

Accuracy depends on the technique used, the quality of the question construction, and the skill of the examiner. Validated single-issue techniques scored numerically perform substantially better than screening formats covering many topics at once. We explain the specific research for your exam type during the pre-test. See our full discussion of polygraph errors.

Are polygraph results admissible in Texas courts?

Generally, no. Texas courts do not admit polygraph results as evidence unless both parties stipulate to admission in advance. Results are used constantly outside the courtroom, however: in charging decisions, plea negotiations, probation compliance, internal investigations, and case strategy. Your attorney can advise on how a result would be used in your matter.

How long does an appointment take?

Plan on two to three hours. The pre-test interview is the longest part, because question construction is where accuracy is won or lost. Rushing that stage is the most common cause of an inconclusive result.

Can my employer require me to take a polygraph?

In most cases, no. The federal Employee Polygraph Protection Act prohibits the majority of private employers from requiring, requesting, or suggesting a polygraph. Narrow exemptions exist, including certain security service firms, pharmaceutical handlers, and ongoing investigations into specific workplace losses. Government employers are treated differently. Call us and we will walk you through where your situation falls.
